Healthy during the week but when it comes to the weekend it all goes down the pan when you go out for a meal? It’s a common pattern to get stuck in and can undo you reaching your goals.
With our tips, you can dine out with confidence and still maintain your healthy lifestyle.
So, how do you enjoy a meal with friends or family without feeling guilty or completely derailing your progress?
The truth is, we love our restaurants! The average UK person eats out at least once a week. Eating out is a huge part of our social life.
But.., you CAN still enjoy going out to eat while staying on track with your nutrition goals. You just need to be prepared and make informed choices.
At CrossFit Chiltern, a key part of the Ignite Nutrition Programme is to equip you with the practical strategies to navigate any food environment – including your favourite restaurants – with confidence and ease. You should be able to still enjoy life without having to restrict it.
The Challenges of Eating Out (and Why They Don’t Have to Be)
Restaurants, by their nature, are designed to make food taste amazing, which often means larger portions, more sugars and salt than you’d use at home. This can make staying on track feel impossible:
- Portion Distortion: Restaurant portions are notoriously generous, encouraging overeating.
- Hidden Ingredients: Sauces, dressings, and cooking methods can add significant calories, fats, and sugars.
- Social Pressure: It can feel awkward to make “healthy” choices when everyone else is indulging.
- Lack of Information: Menus sometimes lack detailed nutritional information, making informed decisions difficult.
But with a few smart strategies, you can enjoy the experience and keep your health goals in sight.
My Top Tips for Dining Out (From the Ignite Nutrition Programme)
When working with our Ignite Nutrition Programme, I will focus on empowering you with simple, habit-based solutions that work in real-world scenarios. Here are my top tips for dining out with confidence:
- Plan Ahead! Look at the Menu before you go: This is your number one superpower. Most restaurants, especially larger chains or those with diet-conscious clientele, have their menus online. Many also provide nutritional information. This allows you to make calm, rational choices beforehand, rather than impulsive ones under pressure. You can even pick your meal before you arrive!
- Skip the bread and make a swap for the triple cooked chips: These often add unnecessary calories and can fill you up before your main course even arrives. If bread is brought to the table, simply ask the server to remove it if you know it’s a temptation.
- Ask for Dressings & Sauces on the Side: This gives you control over how much you use. A dressing can easily add hundreds of calories and grams of fat to an otherwise healthy salad. Drizzle sparingly or dip your fork in the dressing before picking up your food.
- Substitute Pasta or Rice with Veggies: Many restaurants are happy to swap a starchy side for extra vegetables. Instead of chips with your steak, ask for green beans or a side salad. With pasta dishes, ask if they can serve it with courgetti (zucchini noodles) or a smaller portion of pasta with extra vegetables.
- Watch the Portion Size. If Portions Are Large, Consider Asking if You Can Take Leftovers Home: When your food arrives, if the portion looks particularly generous, don’t hesitate to ask if the restaurant offers the option to box up your leftovers to take home. Granny used to do it, why can’t we? You’ll have a ready-made healthy lunch for the next day or for the dog if you change your mind 😉
- Eat Your Calories, Don’t Drink Them – Make Water Your Beverage of Choice: Sugary drinks, elaborate cocktails, and even large glasses of juice can add significant, often forgotten, calories to your meal. Stick to water, sparkling water, or unsweetened tea. If you want an alcoholic drink, stick to a single serving and factor it into your overall plan.
By implementing just a few of these habits, you can enjoy the social aspect of dining out, whether it’s at a local pub, a family-friendly Italian, or a trendy cafe, without compromising your progress. Our Ignite Nutrition Programme is designed to help you integrate these practical strategies seamlessly into your lifestyle.
