In the world of fitness, we spend a lot of time debating macros and calories. But, there is a more fundamental standard that dictates your results: Food Quality.
Most of what fills the modern supermarket isn’t actually food; it’s a “highly processed food-like product.” These products are engineered to be hyper-palatable (making you overeat) and are packed with inflammatory oils and hidden sugars that wreck your insulin sensitivity (see our Jan 13th blog).
If you want to unlock a new level of performance, you need to adopt the Whole Food Standard.
The Simple Rule: The Ingredient Test
The easiest way to audit your nutrition is to look at the label. If a food has more than five ingredients, or if you can’t pronounce half of them, it’s a processed product, not a whole food. A whole food is the ingredient.
Why the Whole Food Standard Wins:
- Biological Satiety (The Fullness Signal): It is incredibly difficult to overeat grilled chicken, steak, or broccoli. Whole foods are naturally dense in the fibre and protein that signal “fullness” to your brain. Processed foods are designed to bypass these signals, leading to the “energy rollercoaster” we want to avoid.
- The Anti-Inflammatory Effect: Processed foods trigger systemic inflammation, which manifests as “grindiness” in your joints and slow recovery between WODs. By shifting to single-ingredient foods, you allow your body to focus its resources on repairing muscle tissue rather than fighting off inflammatory stress.
- Steady State Energy: Unlike the sharp peaks and troughs caused by refined sugars, whole foods are digested slowly. This provides the stable, sustained energy you need to attack a 20-minute AMRAP without hitting a wall.
Keep it Simple
Don’t overcomplicate your plate. Focus on meat, fish, eggs, vegetables, nuts, seeds, some fruit, and little starch. If it came out of the ground or had a mother, it meets the standard. When you fix the quality, the quantity often takes care of itself.
