Building Your Tribe

Have you ever heard of the crab 🦀 analogy?

Have you ever heard the story of the crabs in a bucket? It’s a classic parable with a powerful message about the company we keep. Imagine a bucket full of crabs. One crab tries to climb out, but the others grab it and pull it back down. No matter how hard that one crab tries, it can’t escape because the others keep dragging it back.

This, unfortunately, is a common scenario in life. When you’re striving to improve yourself, reach new heights of fitness, or simply make positive changes, there will always be those who, consciously or unconsciously, try to hold you back. They might do it through negativity, discouragement, or even outright sabotage. These are the “crabs” in your bucket.

At CrossFit Chiltern, we believe in the power of community. We see it every day in our box – people pushing themselves, supporting each other, and celebrating successes together. But building a strong community starts with you and the people you choose to surround yourself with.

Taking Inventory of Your “Bucket”

Think about the 5-10 people you spend the most time with. Who are the people influencing your thoughts, your actions, and your beliefs? Now, honestly categorize them:

  • Uplifting: These are your cheerleaders, your motivators, the ones who believe in you even when you doubt yourself. They inspire you to be better and support you every step of the way.
  • Dragging: These are the crabs. They might be negative, critical, or jealous. They may try to discourage you, minimize your achievements, or tempt you away from your goals.
  • Neutral: These individuals might not actively pull you down, but they don’t necessarily lift you up either. Their impact on your journey is minimal.

It’s important to remember that the people who helped you get to where you are today might not be the same people who can help you reach your next level. Growth often requires evolving your circle.

Asking the Tough Questions

If you’ve identified some “crabs” in your bucket, it’s time to ask yourself some tough questions:

  • Have you clearly communicated your goals and aspirations to them? Sometimes, people might be holding you back unintentionally because they don’t understand your motivations. Open and honest communication can make a big difference.
  • Do they genuinely deserve a place in your inner circle? If someone consistently brings you down, it might be time to re-evaluate the relationship. You deserve to be surrounded by people who support your journey.

Being a Source of Positivity

Remember, this isn’t just about identifying the “crabs” in your life. It’s also about recognizing your own role in your relationships. Are you being an uplifting force for others? Are you encouraging their growth and celebrating their successes?

Building Your Tribe

Life is too short to be surrounded by negativity. Cultivate a tribe that lifts you up, challenges you to be your best, and celebrates your victories. At CrossFit Chiltern, we foster a community of support and encouragement. We believe that everyone deserves to be surrounded by people who believe in them.

Here are some ways to build a supportive fitness tribe:

  • Connect with like-minded individuals at the box. Engage with your fellow athletes, participate in classes, and get involved in social events.
  • Find a workout buddy. Having someone to train with can provide accountability, motivation, and encouragement.
  • Share your goals with your coaches. Our coaches are here to support you every step of the way. They can provide guidance, motivation, and help you stay on track.

Remember, you have the power to choose who you surround yourself with. Choose wisely, and watch yourself soar.
