3 Things to Do Before Every CF Class

Every day, people walk through our doors at CrossFit Chiltern with a mix of excitement and hesitation. They’ve seen the videos on social media, heard stories from friends, and, let’s be honest, have probably heard a few wild rumours. It’s no surprise that a programme as powerful and popular as CrossFit has attracted a few misconceptions along the way.

To make the most of your experience, here are some essential tips for CrossFit Class Prep.

We’re here to set the record straight. As a company dedicated to helping people move well, live well, and be well, we want to clear the air about what CrossFit truly is, who it’s for, and how it can change your life.

Here are five of the most common myths we hear, and the reality behind them.

Myth #1: CrossFit is Dangerous and Leads to Injury

This is, by far, the most pervasive myth we hear. The truth is, any form of physical exercise can lead to injury if not performed correctly. The key to avoiding injury in CrossFit—or any gym—is quality coaching and a focus on proper mechanics.

As the founder of CrossFit, Greg Glassman, often said, the goal is “constantly varied, functional movements, performed at high intensity.” The key word here is functional. These are movements your body is designed to do—squatting, lifting, pulling, and pushing. At CrossFit Chiltern, we prioritize moving well first, which is why we spend so much time on foundational movements and skill work. You don’t get to the intensity until you’ve mastered the mechanics. Our coaches are trained to spot and correct improper form, ensuring every athlete—from a total beginner to a seasoned pro—is moving safely.

Myth #2: You Have to Be in Shape to Start CrossFit

This couldn’t be further from the truth. CrossFit is for everyone. It is not a programme for the elite; it’s a programme for life. The beauty of CrossFit is its scalability. Every single workout can be modified to match your current fitness level.

If a workout calls for pull-ups, but you can’t do one yet, our coaches will have you do ring rows or a different movement to build the necessary strength. If the prescribed weight for a lift is too heavy, we’ll use a lighter weight. We meet you where you are. The person next to you might be an elite athlete, but you are both doing the same fundamental workout, just scaled to your individual abilities. This scalability is a core principle that makes CrossFit an inclusive and welcoming environment for people of all ages and abilities.

Myth #3: CrossFit is Just for Young, Competitive Athletes

Look around our gym, and you’ll see people from all walks of life. We have teenagers, parents, grandparents, and everyone in between. We coach everyone from stay-at-home mums to busy executives and retired grandfathers.

While the CrossFit Games showcase the most elite athletes in the world, they represent less than 1% of the global CrossFit community. The vast majority of people who do CrossFit are everyday people looking to improve their quality of life. For us, CrossFit is about being strong enough to carry your kids, having the energy to play with your grandkids, or simply being able to live life without physical limitations. It’s about health and longevity, not just competition.

Myth #4: CrossFit is Too Expensive

This myth often comes from comparing a CrossFit membership to a typical commercial gym membership. While the monthly cost may be higher, you’re not just paying for access to equipment. You’re paying for a comprehensive fitness solution.

Think of your membership as an all-inclusive package that includes professional coaching, daily programming, and a vibrant community. You have coaches with you for every session, guiding you, teaching you, and keeping you accountable. You also have a built-in support system of people who will cheer for your successes and lift you up when you’re struggling. When you factor in the value of personalised coaching and a built-in community, a CrossFit membership is an investment in yourself and your long-term health.

Myth #5: CrossFit is All About Going All-Out, All the Time

While high intensity is a core component, it’s not the only component. The goal is to be fit, and being fit requires knowing when to push and when to back off. As EC Synkowski often states, “CrossFit is not an all-or-nothing proposition.” Our coaches understand this and help athletes find the right balance. Rest and recovery are equally important and are built into our programming. Recognizing the signs of overtraining and knowing when to take a rest day is a crucial part of becoming a better athlete, which is a key component of our lifestyle coaching.
