5 Signs You Need a Rest Day (and What to Do About It)

As a coach, I love seeing my members show up consistently and put in the work. But sometimes, the most important thing you can do for your fitness isn’t another workout—it’s taking a day off. Pushing through when your body is fatigued isn’t brave; it’s a fast track to burnout, injury, and a frustrating plateau.

Here are the 5 most common signs that your body needs a rest day, and what you should do about it to ensure you come back stronger.

1. You’re Experiencing Localised Pain

A little bit of soreness (Delayed Onset Muscle Soreness, or DOMS) after a tough workout is normal. It’s a sign your muscles are repairing and rebuilding. But if you’re feeling sharp, nagging, or localised pain in a joint or a specific area, that’s a different story. Pain is your body’s alarm system, and ignoring it is a fast track to injury.

What to do: Don’t try to “work through” pain. A rest day, avoiding movement that aggravates the pain or a significant de-load is a chance to let your body heal and prevent a minor issue from becoming a major one.

2. Your Performance is Dropping

You’re a strong person, but you’re struggling to lift weights you usually handle with ease. Your times on your favorite workout are slower than usual. You feel heavy, sluggish, and unmotivated in the gym. This isn’t a sign of weakness; it’s a sign of overtraining.

What to do: Your nervous system needs a break. A rest day will allow it to reset, so you can come back with renewed strength and energy.

3. You Feel Unusually Fatigued or Moody

Your body doesn’t distinguish between the stress of a hard workout and the stress of a busy day at work. When your recovery is lacking, your cortisol levels can remain high, leading to fatigue, irritability, and poor sleep.

What to do: Listen to your body and mind. Use a rest day to genuinely rest, de-stress, and recharge your mental batteries.

4. You’re Getting Sick More Often

Overtraining suppresses your immune system. If you find yourself constantly battling a cold or a lingering cough, it’s a sign that your body is run down and is struggling to fight off bugs.

What to do: Prioritise rest and recovery. This is your body’s way of telling you to slow down before it forces you to stop completely.

5. You’ve Lost Your Motivation

When you’re constantly pushing without adequate recovery, your motivation can plummet. The thing you once loved now feels like a chore, and you’re dreading every trip to the gym.

What to do: Taking a rest day can re-ignite your passion. Use the day to remind yourself why you train and come back excited to get after it.

The Right Way to Rest

A rest day doesn’t have to mean sitting on the couch all day.

  • Active Recovery: Go for a light walk, do some gentle stretching, or spend time on a mobility routine. This helps with blood flow and reduces stiffness without stressing your body.
  • Fuel and Hydrate: Use your rest day to fuel your body with nutrient-dense foods and plenty of water to help with muscle repair and recovery.
  • Sleep: Prioritise a good night’s sleep. This is when the real magic of recovery happens.

How We Build in Rest

The CrossFit methodology advises a “3 days on, 1 day off” approach to training. This isn’t a random schedule; it’s a proven way to allow your body to recover, adapt, and make the most of your training.

Our weekly programming at CrossFit Chiltern is designed to facilitate this. We intentionally make Thursday a deload day where the workout is lower in intensity. This provides a perfect opportunity for athletes who are training all week to dial it back, focus on movement quality, and get a head start on their recovery.

Remember, taking a rest day is a sign of intelligence and discipline, not weakness. It’s an essential part of the training process that will keep you on the path to long-term health and a lifelong fitness mindset.
