As Jeremy Reilly, owner of CrossFit Chiltern and a CF Level 3 trainer, I’ve had the privilege of coaching in a variety of fitness environments over the years. Before I opened our doors here in Amersham, I spent time at a commercial gym, where I delivered classes like Spin, Aerobics, and Circuits.
Now, those classes were great for getting people moving and providing a fun, high-energy atmosphere. And as a coach, I was actively involved, taking part in the session right alongside the members. But even then, I knew deep down that those classes weren’t my training. They were a performance, a choreography. My own personal training, the resistance training that I knew was essential for my strength and longevity, was something I did separately, on my own time.
This experience taught me a profound lesson about the difference between coaching and performing. And it solidified the core philosophy we live by here at CrossFit Chiltern: Our coaches don’t just choreograph workouts; we practice what we preach.
The CrossFit Difference: Coaching Over Choreography
In a traditional fitness class, the coach is often leading the workout with you, shouting encouragement, and keeping the energy high. While this is great for motivation, it means they’re focused on performing the workout themselves, not on you.
In our CrossFit classes, you’ll notice a fundamental difference. Our coaches are relentlessly focused on you. We are not performing the workout; we are observing, correcting, and coaching. We are there to:
- Ensure Perfect Mechanics: We’re watching your air squat, your deadlift setup, your press-up form. We’ll give you a cue to adjust your posture, or a slight tweak to your technique, because we know that small changes make a massive difference to both your safety and your long-term progress.
- Master Scaling: We’re helping you find the right scaling option for your fitness level and daily energy, ensuring you get the intended stimulus of the workout without risking injury.
- Provide Individual Attention: Even in a group class, our coaches are able to give you individualised feedback because their primary job is to observe and coach, not perform.
This hands-on, detail-oriented approach is what separates our coaching from a choreographed class. It’s a genuine commitment to your progress.
The Power of Authenticity: Our Coaches Follow the Same Path
What makes this philosophy so genuine is that our coaches all follow the very same training principles and programming that we deliver to you.
- We Live the Methodology: We believe in constantly varied, high-intensity, functional movements. We know that this methodology builds a body that is strong, capable, and prepared for anything. We live that belief every day in our own training sessions.
- We Trust the Process: Our coaches are not off doing some other “secret” training. They follow the same programming, they hit the same WODs, they work on their weaknesses, and they prioritise their nutrition and recovery, just like we ask our members to.
- We Understand Your Journey: Because we train the same way, we understand the challenges you face—the frustration of a plateau, the exhaustion of a tough workout, the dedication required for a new skill. We can relate to your journey because we’re on it too.
This isn’t about being on a stage; it’s about being on a journey with you. We have a deep, personal belief in the methodology and programming we deliver because we know, from our own experience, that it works.
