Hyrox is an Event, CrossFit is a Methodology

I want to address a question I get a lot as new fitness trends emerge: “Should I be doing Hyrox training instead of CrossFit? Let’s delve into CrossFit vs Hyrox to understand the differences better.”

My answer is always honest and direct: No, but you can compliment CrossFit with Hyrox training.

Hyrox is fantastic. It’s a brilliant competition, it provides a massive amount of motivation, and it’s a brilliant way to test your fitness. We’ve even had two pairs from CrossFit Chiltern reach the Hyrox World Finals while following our standard programming and adding just a small amount of specific prep work.

When considering training options, many enthusiasts find themselves asking about CrossFit vs Hyrox and which might suit their goals better.

But here is the core, non-negotiable truth: Hyrox is a event prep. CrossFit is a methodology for general physical preparedness.

Event-Based Training

An event-based training approach, like preparing solely for a Hyrox race, is highly specialised. You train for one specific thing: 8km of running interspersed with the exact same 8 functional stations, in the same order, every time.

While this makes for excellent race performance, it has two major drawbacks for longevity and comprehensive health:

  1. It’s Not a Methodology: A Hyrox-specific affiliate doesn’t have a methodology in the same way. It’s built around one test. CrossFit was founded to solve a massive public health crisis—to get the world off the couch, off the carbs, and off the meds. That requires a constantly varied, broad, and inclusive program that targets all 10 general physical skills, not just the two or three needed for a race.
  2. It Creates Gaps: If you only train for those 8 stations, you ignore essential pillars of fitness like high-skill gymnastics, heavy Olympic lifting, and true max-effort power development. This leaves you vulnerable to plateaus, burnout, and imbalances. You’re becoming a specialist at one thing, but less prepared for everything else.

Why We Are Genuine: Our Method is Our Mission

As a coach and owner, my passion and professional focus is genuine, complete physical and mental fitness. I believe with all my heart that the CrossFit methodology is the best way to achieve that.

Our class plan—CrossFit, Hyrox and Strength—is not a random collection of classes thrown together for variety. It’s a single, systematic, year-round program designed to interlink:

  • Strength Cycles build raw power
  • Skill Elements in classes address complexity (like muscle-ups or handstands).
  • Hyrox Work and our Thursday and Sunday CrossFit Classes builds the aerobic and anaerobic capacity needed for endurance.

When you train with us, you are guaranteed to hit all areas of fitness in a planned, progressive way. We train for the known requirements of daily life (picking up your kids, moving furniture) and the unknowable challenges (running for the bus, carrying a heavy object quickly).

The Smart Athlete’s Approach

If your goal is to compete in Hyrox, follow the lead of our successful athletes who reached the World Finals:

  1. Prioritise CrossFit: The broad base of fitness, functional strength, and mental toughness developed in our daily WODs is your fundamental engine. It covers 80% of what you need.
  2. Add Specificity (Smarter, Not Harder): Include Hyrox specific sessions focused purely on the event’s demands (e.g., long zone 2 runs, transitions between stations, sled pulls) Especially as the event gets closer.
  3. Maintain Longevity: By keeping your CrossFit base, you are preventing the imbalances and overuse injuries that can come from repeating the exact same event demands week after week.

Being genuine means being true to the methodology that works best for long-term health. We are a coaching facility dedicated to making you fitter for life, not just for one hour on race day.
