The CrossFit Open: Why You Should Sign Up (Even if You’re Not a Competitor)

The CrossFit Open is for everyone, regardless of your experience or fitness level. It’s a unique opportunity to challenge yourself, connect with the CrossFit community, and celebrate your fitness journey.

What is the CrossFit Open?

The Open is a three-week worldwide competition where athletes complete workouts at their local CrossFit affiliate (or even at home) and submit their scores online. It’s a chance to test your fitness against others in your age group and around the world.

Why participate?

  • Accountability and Motivation: The Open provides a goal to work towards and helps you stay motivated throughout the year.
  • Community: The Open brings the CrossFit community together, fostering camaraderie and support.
  • Personal Growth: It’s an opportunity to push your limits, achieve personal goals, and track your progress.
  • Competition: For those with competitive aspirations, the Open is the first step towards qualifying for the CrossFit Games.

But this year, there are even MORE reasons to sign up!

  • The Community Cup: This brand new online competition groups you with other athletes of similar abilities based on your Open performance. You’ll be assigned a level from 1-10 (10 being Elite) and compete against others in your tier. This takes place mid-June right here at CrossFit Chiltern, giving you another exciting goal to work towards after the Open!
  • CrossFit Chiltern Pairs Competition: We’re hosting a fun in-house pairs competition exclusively for athletes who complete all 3 Open workouts. This is your chance to team up with a friend and put your fitness to the test! (Date TBC)

Who can participate?

The Open is designed for everyone, with divisions for all ages and abilities:

  • Individual: For athletes aged 18-34.
  • Age Groups: For teenagers (14-17) and masters athletes (35+).
  • Adaptive Divisions: For athletes with permanent impairments.

Workout variations:

  • Rx’d: The most challenging option, performing the workouts as prescribed.
  • Scaled: Offers modifications for some movements and lighter weights.
  • Foundations: A great starting point for those new to CrossFit.

Common concerns:

  • “I’m not fit enough.” You don’t need to be at a certain fitness level to participate. The Open is about challenging yourself and celebrating your progress.
  • “I don’t want to share my scores.” Sharing scores is part of CrossFit culture, promoting accountability and community.
  • “Why pay the registration fee?” The fee demonstrates commitment and supports the global CrossFit community.
